Story
Northern Italy’s minerally, complex white wines have lately become sommelier favorites. This wine comes from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region that spans Italy’s northeast corner, along the border of Slovenia. This gorgeous area is characterized by smooth rolling hills dotted with forests, vineyards and farms. The hills get steeper farther north, leading to the foothills of the Alps, which is where the stony vineyards that produce this wine are located. Despite its proximity to the mountains, Friuli is pleasantly temperate thanks to the influence of the nearby Adriatic Sea. The region makes red wines, but is better known for its whites— and Alberice, located in the Colli Orientali del Friuli subzone, is a white wine specialist. Of the several fascinating native white grapes, Malvasia Istriana is one of the most ancient, dating to the 16th century. It has an extravagant mix of floral and tropical notes over a gently acidic core.
Sense
The Alberice Malvasia displays classic aromas of white flowers like jasmine and hyacinth layered on top of hints of white peach, ripe pear and dried grass.

The Alberice Malvasia is delicate enough to serve as an aperitif and with light fare like antipasto platters, salads and soups. Fresh herbs and herbaceous vegetables like fennel will also highlight the wine’s vivid flavors. The wine will hold its own with sharp cheeses too.
