Story

Cooled by chilly Indian Ocean breezes, Tasmania has long been a source of top-quality sparkling wine, Riesling and Pinot Noir. This pristine island, Australia’s most mountainous state, has lately become known for Sauvignon Blanc as well. Growing grapes in this emerging wine region is just the sort of challenge that Frogmore Creek owners Tony Scherer and Jack Kidwiler relish. California natives with experience growing and exporting organic produce, Scherer and Kidwiler purchased a rugged, remote stretch of land in southeast Tasmania in 1996 and spent two years preparing the site for planting. The first crop of grapes in 2002 were made into wine by Alain Rousseau, one of Tasmania’s pioneering winemakers. Rousseau comes from a long line of vignerons in France’s Loire Valley, a top region for Sauvignon Blanc. In the case of this wine, the combination of crisp maritime breezes and talent in the winery has yielded a zippy white with exceptionally juicy, citrusy flavors.
