Story
Home to rich, round and exuberantly fruited wines, the Russian River Valley has become California's prime designation for Pinot Noir. Located a few hours north of San Francisco, the valley follows the path of the Russian River as it flows southward from eastern Mendocino County to its mouth on the Sonoma Coast. The redwood-studded river valley offers a unique climate for winegrowing, as the trench it has worn through the western Sonoma hills allows low-lying fog to snake in from the Pacific Ocean. The fog brings moisture and briskly cool temperatures into the folded nooks and crannies, which would otherwise roast in the midsummer sun. This frigid mist works wonders on Pinot Noir, which needs cool temperatures to hold its acidity and nurture its thin skin. As the fog burns off in the early afternoon, the grapes get the heat and sunlight needed to ripen. The 29 Hadley--replete with robust berry fruit, earthy undertones and superfine tannins--is a classic Pinot Noir in the Russian River style, a taste that's becoming recognizable worldwide.

Pure, bright fruit, apparent here in cherry and plum notes, is backed by earthy hints of mushroom and forest floor.

The 29 Hadley will hold its own with meaty but not fatty proteins like duck breast and pork chops, especially if the dishes are accompanied by fruit-based sauces or chutneys, which will play to the wine's berry flavors. Given its blend of earth and fruit, the 29 Hadley will also work well with vegetables like beets, sweet potatoes and mushrooms.
