Story
It’s hard to find a delicious, well-crafted Pinot Noir that doesn’t cost a lot, especially one from central California. This makes the tiny White Hart label particularly intriguing. Owner and winemaker Mike Filice creates just two wines each year, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, the latter sourced from a vineyard in Monterey County’s Santa Lucia Highlands. A subzone of the vast, narrow Central Coast wine district, the area—located about two hours south of San Francisco—benefits from crisp ocean breezes, which give the finicky Pinot Noir grape the time it needs to ripen slowly and evenly. While some winemakers try to extract as much fruit, tannin and intensity as possible from grapes, Filice prefers a subtler approach. This offering impressed our tasting panel with its graceful balance and pure berry-driven flavors.

The nose displays red-fruit scents (berries, cherries) accented by a note reminiscent of mulling spices.

Serve
Unlike most reds, the White Hart Pinot Noir has mild enough tannins to stand up to rich fish (salmon, tuna) and vegetable dishes as well as white meats and poultry. Pair a glass of the wine with a cheesy Croque-Monsieur for an easy weekend lunch, or, for dinner, with Grilled Ahi Tuna with Sesame Soy Sauce or Braised Chicken with Mushrooms.
