Story
The international team behind Vilafonté has enough star power to set up shop in any wine region and garner attention. But South Africa's potential to create exceptional wines from red Bordeaux varieties particularly intrigued winemaker Zelma Long. Only two wines are made each year: Series M, a Merlot-based blend, and Series C, a Cabernet Sauvignon-focused blend. Lying north of the town of Stellenbosch, in the heart of South Africa's wine industry, the Paarl district is known for its supreme suitability to growing red wine grapes. The 2004 C Series shows a quality often found in Long's wines, and, increasingly, in the best Paarl reds: power without ponderousness.

Dried blackcurrant and dark fruits are richly layered with smoke, cocoa and spice.

This wine is meaty and intense, with black cherry and dark chocolate flavors.

Rich flavors are a must when considering food pairings; the intensity of this wine will overwhelm delicate meats. Look to beef and lamb, and don't hesitate to layer on flavor boosters like bacon, mushrooms or garlic. Because the cooking process concentrates and intensifies a meat's flavors, roasts and stews make particularly good companions to young, solidly structured wines such as the Vilafonté.
