Story
Velenosi is one of the top producers in the Rosso Piceno area of the Marche, a gorgeous region tucked between Umbria, Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo with a long coastline on the Adriatic. Just a bit inland, the terrain changes to rolling tree-covered hillsides—the backbone of the Apennine range. The clay and limestone soils are optimum for growing the Montepulciano grapes on which the Marche bases its reds. The tradition here is to blend dark, burly Montepulciano with brighter, more aromatic Sangiovese—contrasting with the famous Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, which must be at least 85 percent of the grape—to make a softer, more amiable wine. The Velenosi winery is located in Rosso Piceno’s hilly area, known as Rosso Piceno Superiore, which produces wines of greater ripeness and intensity than those from other parts of the region. The estate was established in 1984 by Angela and Ercole Velenosi. This wine illustrates the great balance that can be achieved between dusky Montepulciano and cherry-tinged Sangiovese.

Smoky, savory red-meat dishes make a terrific counterpoint to this juicy red blend. Beef, lamb and pork in almost any form will serve this wine well. And while they’re substantial, the polished tannins of the Brecciarolo help make this wine fairly flexible: it will pair well with everything from quick-cooking lean cuts like lamb chops to slow-braised stews and well-marbled roasts. The traditional Marche dish porchetta, a stuffed roll of suckling pig roasted in the oven or on a rotisserie, would be outstanding with this wine.

Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 10 minutes before serving.
