Additional Wine Information

Story
Schramsberg produces some of California’s finest sparkling wines, bottlings that stand neck-and- neck with the finest French Champagnes in blind tastings. And the winery has labyrinthine caves that make it one of the hottest tours for visitors to Napa Valley. Established in 1862 by German immigrant Jacob Schram, the estate was one of the earliest in Napa Valley. Schram’s wines were so successful that he hired Chinese laborers to dig the historic caves, as the cool underground cellars would allow him to make and store finer wines, which were consistently winning awards. After Schram’s death in 1905, the winery and vineyards were left to his son, who then sold the business. The next half-century saw a succession of owners, and in 1965, the abandoned property was purchased by Jack and Jamie Davies, who restored it and converted it for sparkling wine production. The winery continues to be family run, now under the stewardship of Jack and Jamie’s youngest son, Hugh.
Sense
The faint pink hue comes from the Pinot Noir, as does the hint of raspberry and strawberry in the nose.
Savor
Light berry fruits carry a hint of orange zest and brioche.
Serve
Sparkling wine is a far better food wine than it gets credit for. It can have the intensity to stand up to a variety of strong flavors plus the texture for enjoying with such foods as tempura shrimp, consommé and sushi. And a Blanc de Noirs like the Schramsberg is the most versatile of all when it comes to pairing. It has the finesse to partner with light flaky fish yet enough fruity muscle to contend with dishes featuring duck or pork. It even has the power and concentration to age up to a decade. Enjoy it on its own or try it with entrees like Coriander-Rubbed Duck Breasts with Glazed Oranges or Alaskan Halibut Cioppino; find the recipes at williams-sonoma.com.
