Story
Founded in 2002, A to Z took the Oregon wine scene by storm, finding a way to do what had seemingly been impossible: offer quality Oregon Pinot Noir at an extremely good price. Appreciated as the cradle of American Pinot Noir, Oregon is the rare state that has devoted itself spiritually to one varietal. And Oregon makes wonderful Pinot Noir, despite a Pacific Northwestern climate that is subject to more rain and cold than the Pinot Noir vineyards of California. The low yields and variable quality that result from Oregon’s marginal climate in turn make the production of value-priced Pinot Noir a daunting task. A to Z is a collaboration between two couples: Sam Tannahill and Cheryl Francis were winemakers at Archery Summit and Chehalem, respectively, while Bill and Deb Hatcher were veterans of winery development. They came together with a plan that differed from Oregon Pinot’s typical single- vineyard mentality. Rather, they decided to source wine from dozens of high-quality vineyards around Oregon to blend into a seamless whole. The blender’s art is often underappreciated in wine, but with this juicy, yet restrained Burgundian-style Pinot, they show what’s possible even in tough places.
Sense
This pretty red shows the characteristic restraint and complexity of Oregon Pinot, with hints of black cherry, anise, cola and cinnamon.
Savor
With its earthy plum, cherry and spice flavors that are supple and bright, this medium-bodied red combines structure with finesse, melding these elements into a wave of flavor that begins and ends with youthful energy. High tones of cherry, sandalwood and Earl Grey tea decorate the finish.
Serve
Thanks to their mild tannins, most Pinot Noirs are perfect partners to rich fish like tuna, swordfish and salmon as well as poultry, veal and pork. The wine’s structure will also make it a good match for meats like lamb and duck, and its earthy flavor makes it an excellent pair for dishes that feature mushrooms, which grow in abundance during Oregon’s cool, damp autumns and springs. This wine will go wonderfully with recipes like Chicken, Mushroom and Gruyère Grilled Sandwiches or Provencal Roasted Turkey Breast; find the recipes at williams-sonoma.com.
Serving Instructions
Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 15 minutes before serving.
