Additional Wine Information

Story
Located in Roddi, a bucolic village in the Piedmont region, the Olivero Mario winery is a small family-run affair. Begun in 2001 by Mario Olivero, the winery is overseen by his son Lorenzo, a trained oenologist. With a holding of only about 10 acres, Mario and Lorenzo make the most of what they’ve got, producing the region’s three main red varieties—Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera—along with Arneis, a white. While good structure and ageability are expected from Nebbiolo, Lorenzo takes special pride in making a Barbera of equal integrity. This one comes from a vineyard featuring red clay soils at a medium altitude of 900 feet. Aging first in steel and then in barrels gives the wine both structure and accessibility.
Sense
Scents of black cherry and red plum are garnished with vanilla, violet and sandalwood.
Savor
A balanced wine for sipping or for the table, this is a Barbera of significant depth. Its dark cherry and plum flavors are accented with hints of dark chocolate and coffee.
Serve
With light tannins and good acidity, Barbera doesn’t require the heavy meats that bolder, more tannic wines demand. In fact, lighter meats like chicken, veal and pork make superb accompaniments, particularly when complemented with bitter greens, herbs or tomatoes. While tomato-based dishes can obliterate many reds, Barbera is generally improved by the match. Try the wine with Beef Goulash or Polenta with Sausages and Tomato-Olive Ragout (recipes at williams-sonoma.com).
Serving Instructions
