Story
Port’s lush fruit and sweetness make it the quintessential after-dinner drink and the perfect capstone to a glorious holiday feast. This special Colheita bottling comes from Niepoort, one of the most respected names in port. Founded in 1842 by Dutchman Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, the firm is run today by his fifth-generation descendant, the dynamic Eduard Dirk Niepoort. Colheita ports are a type of tawny port, meaning that the wines are generally aged in wood long enough that their flavors become nutty and delicate and the wine takes on a lighter, tawny hue. Most tawny ports consist of blends of wines of varying age and are bottled according to the average age of the wines in the blend (such as 10-year or 20-year tawnies). However, Colheitas are from a single harvest year, in this case, from 1998. After fourteen years of slow aging, Niepoort’s 1998 Colheita displays all of the gorgeous aromatics and mellow flavors that make port such a seductive wine. Its unusual complexity comes in part from extended oak aging—while most Colheitas are aged for seven years in barrel, Niepoort ages theirs three to four years longer. Just 150 cases of this rare wine were allocated to the United States.
Sense
A brick red color with some amber hues, this port offers the nutty, toasty aromas typical of long-aged ports along with fruity notes of dried apricots, peach and orange.

Serve
Enjoyed after dinner, Colheita Port makes a fine course all on its own, or with toasted nuts and dried fruits. But it is also a fantastic food wine and pairs especially well with two types of meals: a cheese course built around nutty aged cheeses such as Manchego, Gouda or Parmigiano-Reggiano; and sweet desserts, especially those with caramel flavors or stewed or dried fruits.
