Story
If it were its own country, Sicily would be the fifth-largest wine producer in the world. Known for decades merely as a supplier of bulk reds and the sweet cooking wine Marsala, this Italian island has recently come into its own. With a rare diversity of climates (it's on the same latitude as Tunisia but gets snowfall on the top of Mt. Etna), soils and grapes, Sicily these days issues a dazzling and intriguing array of wines. Perhaps its most important grape is Nero d'Avola, from which this wine is made. Avola is a town on the southeast corner of Sicily, and its famous "black grape" was selected there hundreds of years ago for its pure quality of fruit, manageable tannins and ability to thrive in hot, arid climates. Since then, Nero d'Avola has been propagated throughout the island. To clearly express the grapes' varietal and regional character, Mirabile winery harvests them by hand when they ripen. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel, which promotes early drinkability and the wine's vigorous, juicy energy.

Aromas of volcanic earth, anise and bay leaf hover above a fruity core of succulent black raspberry.

This rustic, satisfying red goes well with the simple, direct flavors for which Sicilian cooking is known. Fresh, aromatic herbs like rosemary and sage will play to the wine's high notes, as will pungent sides like black olive tapenade. This easygoing wine will also be delicious with a simple appetizer platter of charcuterie and cheese.
