Story
Tempranillo is the dominant grape of Rioja, Spain’s premier wine region. For many years, traditional techniques in Rioja dictated that the wines spend many years in small American oak barrels before being bottled. The result was wines that tasted as much of oak as they did of fruit. But some wines, like this one from Martínez Lacuesta, are released when young. Oak-aged for just seven months, then further refined in bottle, this wine offers all of the dusty, savory spice notes of classic Tempranillo, along with a plummy, fruity intensity from the portions of Mazuelo and Garnacha (Grenache) blended in. Founded in 1895 by Felix Martínez Lacuesta in the prime Rioja Alta subzone, Martínez Lacuesta is still family-run. We were impressed by this bottling’s balance of ripe, modern fruit with the savory, spicy flavors that distinguish the best Riojas.
