Story
Sauvignon Blanc is a Loire Valley specialty that for many people reaches its zenith of quality and expression on the vine-dense slopes of Sancerre, a hilltop village south of Paris. The Domaine du Pré Semelé is located in the rural hamlet of Maimbray, a few miles from Sancerre. The third-generation family business was taken over by brothers Claude and Rémy Raimbault in 1988. Today, Rémy’s sons Julien and Clément are running the domaine as their father approaches retirement. The domaine’s vineyards, with vines aged from 5 to 50 years, sit mostly on prized Kimmeridgian limestone soil, which produces the most mineral and distinctive wines of Sancerre. The brothers farm sustainably with no pesticides or herbicides, which brings out exceptional purity and clarity of expression in their wines.
Sense
The nose is classic Sancerre: grapefruit and gooseberry with hints of elderflower and apple.
Savor
Look for bright, juicy flavors of grapefruit and lemongrass over a chalky minerality.
Serve
With its assertive flavor and engaging texture, the Domaine du Pré Semelé will make a delicious aperitif. But it will also be terrific with food. Goat cheese is a classic—and excellent—pairing, but other hors d’oeuvres or first courses will work as well. Anything with citrus and apple flavors will play to the wine’s palate, while its mineral texture makes a great match for mussels, clams and especially oysters.
