Additional Wine Information

There was little question what Alvaro Espinoza would do with his life. His grandfather was a wine broker and his father was one of the founders of the Association of Oenologists of Chile. Following in their footsteps, Espinoza attained an agriculture degree in Chile, followed by a diploma from the University of Bordeaux’s Institute of Oenology. Now, having spent 20 years making wine in Chile, he is a tireless force in South America’s movement toward organic and biodynamic viticulture, which are both employed in the making of this wine. Launched in 2001, Kuyen, which means “moon” in Mapuche (an indigenous Chilean language), is a more affordable counterpart to Espinoza’s Antiyal label. A rich blend of ripe, dark fruit and notes of earth and spice, Kuyen, according to Espinoza, “is not a second wine but a separate project with its own trajectory. Both wines are made respecting the ancient traditions and a holistic vision of people and the earth.”
The nose suggests plum, blackcurrant and cherry complemented by background notes of green herbs, cedar and granite.
Blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum flavors are laced with hints of licorice, tobacco and cedar.
As a complex blend of a number of grapes, the Kuyen is limber when it comes to food. Its Cabernet component gives the wine enough structure to stand up to heavier meats like a juicy grilled steak or braised short ribs, while the inclusion of gentler grapes like Syrah, Carmenere and Petit Verdot gives it the suppleness to pair with lighter meats like pork tenderloin and veal chops. The wine’s exuberant fruit will play nicely to savory fruit-based condiments like chutneys and reductions. For matches, try Deviled Pork Loin with Grilled Potatoes and Onions or Barbecued Ribs with Hoisin Glaze (recipes at williamssonoma. com).
