Story
As U.S. red wines from the 2007 vintage come into the market, it's clear that this was a superb year for West Coast wine regions, including Washington's Columbia Valley. Located in the southeast part of the state on a northerly latitude, the area has a shorter growing season with a risk of late-season rainfall. But in 2007, a mild Indian summer allowed grapes to stay on the vine, ripening slowly and evenly. With its deep, earthy black fruit flavors, this Columbia Valley red shows the fantastic quality of the vintage. It comes from the J. Bookwalter Winery, founded by Jerry and Jean Bookwalter in 1983, when the state's wine industry was in its infancy. Their son John, who runs the winery today, crafted the wine in collaboration with renowned consultant winemaker Zelma Long. A blend of the red varieties traditionally used in Bordeaux, the cuvée was made with grapes from the Bookwalter family's Conner-Lee Vineyard, a cool site in a warm, sunny region south of Othello, Washington. There, autumn temperatures drop quickly, giving the grapes additional hang time on the vine to ripen slowly and develop thick skins (key to a red wine's tannic structure) and complex flavors. Only 600 cases were produced.
Sense
A quick swirl of the glass releases bright red fruit scents--typical of red wines grown in cooler climates--reminiscent of red raspberries and currants. Subtle notes of rose petal and camphor accent the fruit.
Savor
This wine's fresh red fruit aromas belie the powerful fruit and savory flavors that emerge on the palate. Dense, mouth-filling tastes of black raspberry, olive, plum and bay leaf unwind on a supple framework of polished tannins and fresh acidity.
Serve
The Bookwalter Conflict will taste best with foods containing ample protein and fat, which will counterbalance the wine's tannins and let its softer, fruitier side shine through. Hearty beef, lamb and game dishes fit the bill, as do fatty cuts of pork or ones that are enriched with fats during the cooking process. Grilling or roasting the meat at high heat will add a layer of char that is particularly nice with more tannic wines like this one. The Bookwalter's savory notes (olive, bay leaf) suggest earthy preparations like fresh herbs, mushrooms and olives, but the wine will also be delicious with grilled meats seasoned simply with salt and fresh-cracked pepper.
Serving Instructions
Decant for 1 hour before serving. Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the decanted wine for 10 minutes before serving.
