Story
With its silky palate, refreshing acidity and lush fruit flavors, Pinot Noir is one of the most food-friendly red wines around. This outstanding example from Australia's southeast coast, made in a juicy, supple and straightforward style by Innocent Bystander, delivers classic Pinot structure along with layers of flavor. Innocent Bystander is one of two brands created by fine-wine entrepreneur Phil Sexton; both are produced in an artisanally focused winery in Yarra Valley, Victoria, not far from Melbourne, in the heart of Australia's great cool-climate vineyards. For the Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir, winemaker Steve Flamsteed sourced a combination of estate grapes and others from vineyards even closer to the coast, in Port Phillip. There, proximity to the ocean translates into warm (but not hot) days and cool nights--ideal weather for yielding Pinot Noir that is perfectly poised between tart and sweet.
Sense
The first sniff is all about red fruit, with an abundance of cranberry, cherry and raspberry aromas. After the wine is exposed to air for a few minutes, gentle spice and earthy scents appear, redolent of clove, pine and freshly dug mushrooms.
