Story
Hardy and adaptable, Syrah migrated easily from France to Australia, where it is called Shiraz and has developed a personality distinct from its earthier, more herbaceous French counterparts. While there are plenty of exceptions, Australian winemakers tend to like Shiraz made in a deeply fruity style. The Dead Letter Office Shiraz consistently stands out as an unusually balanced, rich and complex wine for its type. Sweeter and more fruit-driven than reds from cool climates, this juicy Shiraz delivers what you'd expect from a small Australian winery focused on quality. Kim and Mark Longbottom founded Henry's Drive in 1992 as a newly married couple with a long-term commitment to estate-grown grapes. Each of their wines bears a different name. Dead Letter Office pays tribute to the postal clerks who handle undeliverable mail. Most of the grapes for this Shiraz came from McLaren Vale, a coastal region south of Adelaide that offers density and concentration. The fruit from Padthaway offers hints of spearmint and lavender that freshen and lengthen the wine.

Lamb and beef pair especially well with Shiraz, whose intense flavors, plump texture and considerable tannins are balanced by richly marbled steaks, roasts and chops. For seasonings, take inspiration from the wine's pepper and spice notes, and play these up in a rub, marinade or sauce. The ripe fruit of the Dead Letter Office Shiraz will nicely complement sweet and savory accompaniments such as roasted fruits (peaches, plums, apples) and mild chutneys. A pork roast with a crisp, crackling skin and lots of dried fruit in the stuffing, or lamb chops with tomato jam and fresh mint, would be superb.
