Story
Under fourth-generation vintner Daniel Barraud and his wife, Martine, this small estate in a high-altitude zone of Pouilly-Fuisse has become one of the brightest stars of the Maconnais wine district. This well-known cuvee comes from a plot of 35-year-old organically farmed vines at the base of La Roche de Vergisson, a rocky limestone escarpment amidst the soft green hills of Pouilly- Fuisse. The Barrauds age most of their whites in barrels, a technique that suits the wines’ exceptional richness, especially in a warm vintage like 2009. This bottling offers a combination of sweet fruit flavors and freshness—a balance that eluded other Pouilly-Fuisse vintners in 2009 thanks to a heat spike in mid-August that hastened the grapes’ ripening (and lowered their acidity). Winemaker Julien Barraud, son of Daniel and Martine, takes a high-touch, low-tech approach, which includes harvesting fruit by hand and bottling wines without fining or filtration.

Serve
Fine white Burgundy calls to mind two food-pairing principles: simple and luxurious. Chardonnay’s mild flavors are easily overwhelmed by pungent ingredients; instead, look to rich ingredients that lend a silky texture, such as butter, cream and mild cow’s milk or goat cheeses. Fresh herbs work well with the minerally nature of these wines, and the Barraud La Roche will be well matched by mild foods that include a hint of green flavors.
