Story
Paul Hobbs can do no wrong. At least, that's the impression many wine lovers have of this acclaimed winemaker, who first won fame crafting Opus One at Robert Mondavi and then helped to bring Simi--another Napa Valley Cabernet powerhouse--to prominence before founding his own winery in 1991. But Hobbs believes that Mother Nature is the ultimate winemaker, and the best that he can do is shepherd the wine along in its journey from vine to glass. Hence, he focuses most of his energy in the vineyard. Even after more than 30 years, he acknowledges that each year brings new challenges: "There's never any saying, 'I've got this figured out,' because as soon as I think that, I realize how little I know." This rich Cabernet Sauvignon, a careful blend of grapes from top Napa vineyards, is named for a barn on the Hobbs family farm where Paul grew up.
Sense
Scents of ripe blackberries, cassis and dark plums are rounded out with touches of vanilla, mint and smoke.
Savor
Dense with plush black-currant flavors, this Cabernet offers plump, chewy tannins, a mouth-filling body, and a lasting finish of mocha and vanilla.
Serve
This full-bodied Cabernet is made for red meat, be it smoked brisket or barbecued ribs. Or enjoy the wine alongside a beef roast or grilled steak, and savor the last few sips with some after-dinner cheeses and crusty bread. Stilton, Gorgonzola and other strong aged cheeses will stand up to the wine's rich fruit and lush palate.
