Story
Copain (the French word for "pal") is a partnership between vigneron Wells Guthrie and former software engineer Kevin McQuown. Since their first vintage in 1999, they have looked to Burgundy and the Rhône Valley for inspiration, producing varieties native to each of those regions. Guthrie even worked for the great Rhône producer Chapoutier before cofounding Copain. The partners have always aimed to make wines with pure expression of fruit and site that are not overly ripe or overly alcoholic. Les Voisins (French for "the neighbors") is a red that celebrates the grape-growing families of California. The grapes come from vineyards in the Anderson Valley and Yorkville Highlands in the Northern California county of Mendocino, whose chilling Pacific breezes flow over warm, dry hills filled with manzanita and juniper trees. Guthrie is passionate about Syrah from France's northern Rhône. That style demands a balance between fruit and savoriness in a silky package, all of which is found in this bottling.

The scent of blueberries and blackberries intermingles with darker aromas of violets and nightshade, plus a hint of white pepper.

The Copain Syrah has a gamy element that balances its rich fruit. Consequently, it will benefit from being paired with strong meats like lamb, grass-fed beef or game such as venison or boar. Thanks to its soft tannins, the wine works well when these meats are grilled or braised, especially if you play to the wine's high tones with accents like rosemary, olives, black pepper, garlic and thyme.
