Story
Axel Pauly's Steinerd cuvée comes from one of the most famous Riesling sites in the world. Located along the middle stretch of Germany's Mosel River, the medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues is more than 700 years old, and vineyards have climbed the rocky banks for just as long. Steinerd means "stone earth"--the terrain, a mixture of blue and red slate, gives the wines a minerality and richness that are difficult to achieve in Germany's cool northern climate. Axel is the latest generation to run the family's estate; his father, Rudolf, recently passed control of the winery to his son after many years of apprenticeship. While working at wineries in California and New Zealand, the younger Pauly was exposed to new techniques. He combines this contemporary perspective with a deep reverence for the traditions and vineyards of his homeland. This wine is an excellent example of site-specific winemaking: the high percentage of red slate in the Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg Vineyard gives the wine an exotic tropical bouquet that is utterly distinct from the lighter, more mineral-driven aromas of the rest of Pauly's cuvées.

Lush, opulent aromas of apricots, lychees and green peaches mingle with floral-tinged notes of honeysuckle and citrus blossoms.

A light-bodied white will be overwhelmed by rich meat dishes, but a wine with the lush intensity of the Steinerd Riesling can stand up to richer fare. This wine's touch of sweetness makes it perfect for foods that have a little sugar in them, from sweet-and-spicy Asian sauces to caramelized meats and roasted root vegetables.
