Alfred Gratien is a small domaine demonstrating
the artisanship and intimacy of tiny
grower-producers but surpassing them in
quantity. The winery achieves this balance by
owning vineyards and buying grapes as well.
One of the most highly respected producers
in Champagne, Gratien adheres to traditional
methods that yield cuvees of great depth and
character. For instance, whereas many wineries
ferment grapes in stainless-steel tanks,
which are easier to use and maintain, Gratien
still ferments in wooden barrels, to add extra
roundness and structural complexity. For this
same reason, the bottles are aged under cork
as they go through their secondary fermentation,
a time-consuming technique rarely seen
today. All of this attention to detail shows up
in the wines, which are as graceful as they
are full and rich.
The nose delivers a faint scent of wild strawberries, warm brioche, spiced
orange peel and ripe rhubarb.
Creamy on the front, the wine froths and foams in the mouth before leaving a
long raspberry-tinged aftertaste.
Champagne is a far better food wine than it gets credit for. It can have the
intensity to stand up to a variety of strong flavors, plus the texture for enjoying
with such foods as tempura shrimp, consomme and sushi. And Rose
Champagne like the Alfred Gratien is the most versatile of all when it comes
to pairing. It has the delicacy to partner with light flaky fish yet enough fruity
muscle to contend with dishes featuring duck or pork. Try it with recipes like
Coriander-Rubbed Duck Breasts with Glazed Oranges and Alaskan Halibut
Cioppino, available at williams-sonoma.com.
