Additional Wine Information

Story
Piedmont is known for culinary excellence, regularly attracting crowds of gourmands to sample its white truffles, impeccable cheeses and wines made from prized Nebbiolo grapes. Palladino is one of the oldest wineries in northwestern Italy, tracing its roots in the town of Serralunga d'Alba back to 1870. Producing only 5,000 cases a year, master winemaker Maurilio Palladino uses fruit exclusively from three small estate vineyards.
Sense
Huge, supple and more approachable than expected for such a dense wine at this young age, the dark, fruity red exemplifies its varietal's reputation as "the king of wines and the wine of kings."
Savor
If wine is a language, then this offering speaks in a thick Piedmontese accent. Hints of black licorice, leather, tar and roses clearly say "Barolo."
Serve
This robust wine demands hearty food and a vigorous decanting. For an authentic Italian menu, put out antipasti--olives, salumi and marinated vegetables make a good assortment--for nibbling beforehand. Then sit down to a small pasta course (primo), followed by a substantial but simple meat dish (secondo), like braised lamb or braised short ribs, with vegetables on the side. Finish with a fruit plate, or offer biscotti and vin santo.
Serving Instructions
Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
